Charity offers help to Leicestershire families needing live-in care and night care

A family member needing care can be a challenge at any time, but COVID-19 has created more worry. Quality Life UK and the Blanche Sargaunt Foundation are working together to ease the burden.

Quality Life UK have been providing live-in care and night care to clients in and around Leicestershire for over 6 years. This type of care enables people to stay living in their own homes for longer. Live-in care involves a carefully selected carer living in an individual’s own home and providing round the clock care, support and companionship. For those with dementia in particular, the familiarity of being able to remain in their own home is often far preferable to moving into a care home.

Live-in care and night care can be expensive and local authority or NHS funding often isn’t available. Thankfully the Blanche Sargeaunt Foundation is here to help. The Foundation was created in 2016 by Patrick Eales, Blanche Sargeaunt’s nephew. Blanche received live-in care at home in Loughborough for the last two years of her life, staying in touch with family and friends and remaining part of the community. Patrick believes that this care enriched and extended his aunt’s life. When he received a legacy in her will he decided to use the funds to establish a charity which enables other people to receive the same high quality care.

The Foundation now supports families in Leicestershire and Warwickshire who would benefit from live-in care or night care but are unable to meet the full cost themselves. The Foundation will typically contribute up to a third of the total cost of a care package. That could be up to £20,000 a year, putting live-in care and night care within the reach of families who wouldn’t be able to afford it otherwise.

COVID-19 has increased demand for live-in care in particular. People are concerned about the risks of infection within care homes. They’re also worried that visiting restrictions will leave their loved ones feeling isolated. A livein carer will help their clients to feel connected with their family. Since the pandemic began, Quality Life’s carers have focused on providing support with Zoom and Facetime calls as well as socially distanced visits when the rules have allowed.

The Blanche Sargeaunt Foundation have responded to this increased demand by making more funding available for live-in care as well as night care. If you or a family member would benefit, please get in touch with Quality Life UK for more information and to discuss making an application.

We’ll leave you with the words of a family that received help from the Foundation:

“The care that has been provided for Dad this last year has been outstanding. Physically, he is visibly stronger and he seems as happy as could be expected in the circumstances. We are very grateful for the combined support that The Blanche Sargeaunt Foundation and Quality Life UK have provided. Between them they have allowed Dad to stay living in the comfort of his own home. We will always be so grateful.”
